For 20 years now, purposeful remediation is underway in regions which were severely affected by uranium ore mining in Saxony and Thuringia.
During that period, some 5.53 billion Euro have been spent on the decommissioning of mines and mills as well as on the cleanup of contaminated plant areas. Reclamation achievements by the national company Wismut GmbH in the affected regions are not only an essential prerequisite for the restoration of a liveable environment but they also provide chances for a new beginning. Today’s scenery is dominated by reclaimed landscapes. Landscapes which again provide new vistas for unrestricted re-use.
