New prospects in the South American mining sector

The issue of mine closure and remediation of mines that are currently still active will become increasingly important in the future – a task for the future in the South American mining sector. The experience of the Wismut environmental project can provide important assistance in efficiently and sustainably planning and implementing closure plans.

As part of the existing cooperation between the federal company Wismut GmbH and the Chilean state-owned copper producer CODELCO – Corporación Nacional del Cobre de Chile, a team from Wismut visited CODELCO's Ventanas Division and northern mining district near Calama in the Atacama Desert. As a result of the site visits and bilateral talks with the Chilean partners, concrete steps for further cooperation were agreed upon.
